What are Limiting Beliefs?
Limiting beliefs are those insidious messages we tell ourselves that aren't really true. The problem with limiting beliefs is that they become more powerful with repetition. If you feed these messages to yourself often enough, they can become your reality. Think carefully about the way you talk to yourself and make sure you're not creating a cage of unhealthy thoughts that will stop you from reaching your full potential.
Identifying Your Limiting Beliefs
Limiting beliefs are negative messages you tell yourself that prevent you from moving forward and accomplishing your dreams. Nearly any pessimistic view can take the form of a limiting belief. Some common self-limiting messages that we tell ourselves include:
- I'm not smart enough to figure this out.
- I'm too old now to do that.
- There's not enough time to pursue my dreams.
Limiting beliefs come from beliefs others have taught you or experiences which led you to conclude that this is the way things are. Look for those problematic little phrases like "I can't," "they won't," "I'm not," or "I don't." These are all limiting beliefs that will create a confining reality where you're building barriers between yourself and your dreams.
Challenging Your Limiting Beliefs
The first step to overcoming limiting beliefs is to diligently challenge them, one by one. Sit down with your stumbling blocks and really examine whether they're true. Do you truly believe that you're not qualified for the promotion? Then pick up a piece of paper and list all your strengths, abilities, and accomplishments. Gather some letters of recommendation from others and see what they think of you. If your qualifications truly don't stand up to the requirements for the job, focus on building those skill sets and climbing the ladder rather than lamenting the rung that you're currently on. Do you honestly believe you’re not worthy of true love? Then list all the qualities that make you a unique and beautiful person, inside and out.
